What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is not the same for all seniors. Nonetheless, it has some key features that apply to everyone. Perhaps most importantly, it’s designed for seniors who need at least some support for their daily activities.

Why do participating seniors need this help? They have some kind of health issue that makes it harder for them to function. However, overall, they’re just as interested in staying active as seniors in independent living programs.

Levels of Senior Assisted Living Services

A broad range of seniors need some form of day-to-day support. However, the degree of that need varies. It varies so much that senior assisted living services can be broken down into three distinct levels.

Seniors in the first level resemble seniors in independent living in many ways. Still, they require some assistance to navigate their daily routines. For example, they may need someone to drive them while doing important tasks. They may also need help cooking meals, sticking to their self-care practices, or following their medication routines.

Seniors in the second level need assistance with their activities of daily living (ADLs). That’s the term for such essential activities as:

  • Getting into or out of bed
  • Putting on clothes
  • Bathing or showering
  • Putting on clothes
  • Eating meals
  • Moving from a sitting to a standing position, or vice versa

However, the amount of required assistance is fairly limited. Generally speaking, seniors at this level have problems with two or three ADLs. The extent of help they need may vary between these activities.

Seniors at level three need more extensive support for their ADLs. That’s true because they have difficulty performing more of these activities. In addition, they require help on a round-the-clock basis.

Things to Know About Assisted Living – Its Other Key Benefits

There are other important things to know about assisted living in a well-designed program. For example, its benefits don’t end with the daily living support you or your loved one receive. Additional key perks include:

  • A 24/7 secure living environment
  • Personalized attention from the staff responsible for assisting you
  • A day-to-day living setup that features plenty of homey touches

Personalization helps ensure that you always get the amount of help you need. It also makes allowances for your or your loved one’s individual preferences. At all times, you’ll know that you’re receiving the right kind of support for your unique situation.
