Safe Home Modifications for Seniors

Making your home safe with home modifications for seniors is a smart decision to make if you are caring for your loved ones. Staying in their family home can make seniors feel more independent and free when compared to living in a senior community. Unfortunately, many family homes are not designed for seniors, and that can lead to accidents, falls, and hospital visits.

While you may think your home is safe, there are dangers around every corner. Fortunately, there are ways that you can prevent falls, accidents, and other injuries in your home. You can install:

Handrails and grab bars near toilets and in showers

  • Install ramps at door entrances and single steps
  • Install motion-sensing lights
  • Replace doorknobs with levers
  • Make sure hallways and walkways are free from clutter and other objects they can trip over.

Installing smart devices around the home is a great way to make your home feel safe. You can use them to control the thermostat, lighting, window blinds, door locks, and other smart devices.

Parkway Place can create a comprehensive program that gives you everything a senior needs to enjoy retirement. We have independent and assisted living programs where seniors can create a program filled with daily activities, nutritious meals and snacks, and more.  If you are not quite ready to make the move to senior living, we have several senior home safety tips to keep seniors safe while living at home.

How to Make Your Home Safe for Aging Seniors

If you wish to keep your parents at home, there are a few things you can do to make your home more accommodating. Here are some tips on how to make your home safe for aging seniors:

  • Lighting – Go through your home and make sure all of your lightbulbs are new and bright. Install plug-in nightlights in hallways and in their bedrooms, or you can install motion-sensing lighting in bathrooms and other key areas around the home.
  • Flooring – You can reduce tripping hazards by removing any loose carpeting and rugs from your home. You can also install non-slip flooring in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Stairs – Install and secure handrails on either side of the stairs and ensure they are well-lit. There are also stair lifts you can install if they have trouble with the stairs.
  • Bathrooms – Install grab bars and handrails next to toilets and install non-slip bath mats next to showers. You can also install a walk-in tub or shower to make it easier on senior adults.
  • Doorways and entryways – Make sure doorways and entryways are free from clutter and debris to reduce tripping hazards. You can also install ramps to help with walkers, wheelchairs, and carts.
  • Medications – Store all medications in a locked cabinet with clear labels. You should consider placing pills in a pill organizer.

Make sure hallways and walkways are open and well-lit. You can arrange your furniture so they have easy access to a favorite chair or couch.
