Buckner Parkway Place Names Abraham Mathew Executive Director

HOUSTON (Oct. 21, 2019) – Buckner Retirement Services announces the hiring of industry veteran Abraham Mathew as the new executive director for faith-based senior living community Buckner Parkway Place, effective Nov. 11, 2019.

Mathew will take over as executive director for Susan Phelps, who retires after a distinguished career serving senior adults with Buckner Retirement Services since 2003.

“We are grateful for all Susan has done during her career with Buckner,” said Buckner Retirement Services Senior Vice President Charlie Wilson. “She can enjoy retirement knowing she greatly impacted the lives of so many colleagues and residents for the better.

“After meeting Abe, I immediately knew he would be able to jump in to lead and inspire our amazing staff at Parkway Place, while also taking our community’s exceptional care and services to the next level for our residents.”

The hiring of Mathew follows the recent ribbon cutting on the community’s $12.8 million renovation project, as well as the news Buckner Retirement Services’ six Texas communities,  were named one of the Best Workplaces for Aging Services (small and medium) by Great Place to Work®, in partnership with Fortune Magazine.

“My immediate goal with Buckner Parkway Place is to get to know the residents and associates, as I work to uphold the legacy held by the current team while striving towards excellence,” said Mathew. “As executive director, my role is to serve, support and be a reliable resource for the team to ensure we continue as a provider of choice, employer of choice and the best in Houston.”

Mathew’s career working with senior adults began in 2003, and he has since held positions in Texas and Illinois as a Licensed Healthcare Administrator. Mathew is currently working on a Doctorate in Business Administration in Healthcare Management and Leadership from California Intercontinental University in Irvine, Calif. He holds a Master’s in Social Work.

He is an appointee of the Nursing Facility Administrators Advisory Committee by Texas Governor Greg Abbot, as well as a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

“Our seniors deserve the best life experiences and my role is to serve them and make it happen,” added Mathew. “As I am completing research on innovation and technology in senior living, it is my goal to think differently and encourage such innovation while serving senior adults.”

Located in the heart of Houston’s Energy Corridor, Buckner Parkway Place is a 15-acre community serving senior adults with the highest level of hospitality and care. Parkway Place offers a complete continuum of living and care on-site, so residents can have peace of mind knowing their address can remain the same despite changing medical needs.
